Eat Smarter Than Your Competition: Functional Nutrition for Athletes

You train your ass off, you never miss a practice, you are at every competition, you take supplements and make protein shakes, all to achieve your goal of being the best at whatever sport you do.  It’s important to you to be coached by the best and it’s their specialized knowledge that enhances your abilities as an athlete.

But what about your nutrition?

As a nutritionist, I just deal with the food, and the other day I saw people camping in the parking lot of a new Chick-fil-a to win a year supply of their sandwich for a grand opening. That is 1 sandwich a week for 52 weeks. That equals an additional:

22,880 recreational calories*

8,32g fat (not the good kind)

72,800g salt (heart disease!, hyper tension, hard on kidneys, dehydrating and toxic)

2,184g refine carbs (gut dysbiosis, and converts to sugar which leads to additional fat)

Now let’s add in the MOST IMPORTANT FEATURE OF THIS FOOD AND HOW IT EFFECTS YOU, THE ATHLETE!

These little chicken sandwiches have ingredients that absolutely do not enhance your sports performance,but GREATLY TAKE AWAY YOUR ABILITY TO PERFORM AT AN OPTIMAL LEVEL AND CAUSE INFLAMMATION IN YOUR DIGESTIVE SYSTEM AND MORE IMPORTANTLY YOUR BRAIN.

MSG– The sandwiches have a fair amount of MSG (mono sodium Glutamate) a known excito-toxin for the brain and effects the neurotransmitters in a negative manner.

TBHQ– Chick-fil-A food like items are processed in peanut oil with TBHQ (Tertiary Butylhydroquinone). TBHQ is a synthetic antioxidant agent added to the peanut oil as a preservative.  It contains petroleum- derived butane, yum. Peanut oil becomes rancid when it is used under high temperatures, like frying, giving it more carcinogenic properties and also is a high allergen.

Dimethylpolysiloxane-  a chemical used to combat flatulence…now that is telling about the health factor of these food like items.

High Fructose Corn Syrup- Want to increase your body fat? High fructose corn syrup is a high potency sweetener, and in the body puts your pancreas into over drive. Insulin/ cortisol imbalances will create an environment of hormone imbalances, increasing fat percentages, estrogen levels go up and  testosterone levels go down.  High fructose corn syrup  when combined with these high salt levels makes it very addicting and overwhelming to our senses.

This is the type of education you need in your arsenal as a fierce competitor.  This is how you will know how to chose foods that will not take away from all the hard work you put into it. If you are consuming foods high in nutrients, clean proteins that are efficiently adding to your muscle composition, nutrients that enhance your neurotransmitters and brain making you an intelligent and fast as hell athlete and your body is performing at it top level, THERE IS NO STOPPING YOUR ATHELTIC ARETE AND BECOMING A FORCE TO BE RECOND WITH.
