If You Believe a Calorie is a Calorie, then you’ll never achieve your strength & body composition goals.

One of the major differences between Arete Strength’s Performance Training System and most strength training or personal training programs in South Orange County, is our approach to nutrition. From our athletes to our busy professionals, diet is a massive component to optimal performance and body composition.

Over the years, I have had the joy of witnessing a majority of my clients respect my years of research that I have devoted to my profession, and achieve exactly what they desired or more! However, 2% of clients will disagree with virtually everything I say, it is the nature of the business. I do find this interesting because I spend thousands of dollars, every year, and dedicate countless hours in education on the subjects of nutrition and strength and conditioning; while they haven’t read a single study as to what I’m talking about. This 2% are convinced I’m totally wrong. Keep in mind, these are usually the clients that are so far from their goal of health and fitness and are looking for a solution in all the wrong places. Ironically, even their resistance is a validation of our education and information and they don’t even realize it. Why? Well, for one thing, they’re chemically totally out of wack and two, sometimes the truth about nutrition and health requires a person to take responsibility for their actions – pertaining to food choices- and the incorrect choices are taken too personally or they feel like a failure.
I’m here to tell you, a calorie isn’t just a calorie because different calories affect our biochemistry very differently. For example 100 calories of an apple is processed differently in the body than a 100 calories from a bagel. Do you want to give yourself an advantage, or stand in your own way? Then you better start understanding how your food affects you.

This will not make you perform optimally!

I hear about teenage athletes using illegal anabolic steroids, while they wash down a burger, fries, and a coke from Carl’s Jr. Big Mistake! The power of nutrient rich food is lasting and the deflated body and loss of strength from a post steroid cycle is inevitable.

I hear about 30, 40, and 50 “something” professionals starving themselves to lose weight, by restricting calories or counting points. Studies show it will last up to 6 month before they go back to their old ways; maybe you’ve already “been there, done that”?

So to validate what I’m talking about, I have an abridged version of a great lecture by Dr.  Robert Lustig, a pediatric endocrinologist from UC San Francisco. This 26 min lecture is packed with great information about calories and how,in fact, all calories are not created equal, AND illustrates the simple bio-chemical truth. This is only the tip of the iceberg! Take a look at the video, and pay attention to the end around minute 26. Its spot on.

If you’re an athlete that wants to perform better or a busy professional looking improve how you move, feel and look, the affects of what Dr. Lustig discusses go far beyond this lecture. At Arete Strength we expand on this information and we look at your hormone profile multiple times a month so that everything you eat and drink accelerates progress instead of inhibiting it. Food is powerful stuff. Wouldn’t you like to gain an advantage for the rest of your life?
